MSU v. UM
For those who read this blog (all 2 of you!) you will notice that I don't write about sports that often. I do enjoy college football however and today is the day of the 2nd Big Game. Local coverage calls it the big game, but typically the Ohio State game is more important in the grand scheme of things. Also this rivalry is relatively new. While there has been a "fun" rivalry for years, the press largely ignored it until about 15 years ago. Today, all local news channels are obsessed about it.
One of the first things that is different this year is MSU has, thus far, been a dominating team. They have racked up a lot of offense and their 11th ranking shows it. Michigan is in what we call a "restructuring" period. They are not in the top 25 for the first time in years. However, here's my take. MSU has upset U of M quite a few times in the past 8 years, spoiling the hopes of some very good U of M teams. Also, ALL Michigan sports teams CHOKE. It is a RULE. Thus despite the fact that I am a multiple degreed MSU alum, I am actually going out on a limb and saying that Michigan will win. I am predicting a score of 24-18 in favor of the Maize and Blue.
A lot of people always wonder why I don't have animosity towards U of M. Growing up in Ann Arbor, I lived and breathed U of M. I went to school with Lloyd Carr's daughter, Melissa. I played hockey with Bo's kid, Schemmy. My high school's athletic director and track coach was Don Canham, Jr., son of Don Canham, Sr, the AD for U of M for nearly 25 years. Our "home" track was U of M's and I played hockey in Yost Arena and worked at Michigan Book and Supplies.
